Of all the driver signings that have already taken place for 2021, many in F1 feel that current McLaren driver Carlos Sainz has made the biggest move by signing with Ferrari.

However, others have suggested that all Sainz has done is sign up to play second fiddle to current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. The man himself has now given his thoughts on this

Carlos Sainz Denies Being Ferrari No. 2

Many have pointed towards Ferrari’s history of imposing team orders with one driver usually taking precedence over the other as a sign that Sainz will be below Leclerc on the totem pole at Ferrari

Carlos Sainz has now revealed that he hasn’t signed anything that immediately makes him the number 2 while confirming the team still takes precedence over the driver

"I didn't sign anything that makes me a number two driver at Ferrari. Of course it says in the contract that the interest of the team is above that of the driver, but that's what it says in every contract in Formula 1. However, there is nothing in it about a role as second driver"

“I'll do anything for Ferrari and I'll do everything I can to win. If there is a difficult situation, I will always try to make the right decision"

Sainz, however, is confident that this deal with Ferrari will not affect his working relationship with McLaren

“They will tell me everything because I can still help them very well. I asked them specifically, because I want McLaren back on stage as soon as possible. I helped them the last time on that podium and can do so this year”

Formula 1 Officially Set to Return in 1 Month

Formula 1 has confirmed the rumours and released a revised provisional calendar with racing set to resume from the 3rd of July.

For now, 8 races have been confirmed starting with a triple header with two races in Austria followed by Hungary.

Then, after a week’s gap, there will be another triple header with two races in Great Britain, followed by Spain.

There will be another week’s gap before the final double header in Belgium followed by Italy on the 6th of September

F1 CEO Chase Carey has spoken about this and gave a probable number of races that they are planning to conduct

“Due to the ongoing developments surrounding the COVID-19 situation internationally, F1 will finalize the details of the broader calendar and hope to publish in the coming weeks with an expectation of having a total of 15-18 races to complete the season in December”
