LEATT RESPONDS TO RUSTED HELMET BRACKETS ISSUE Cross Training Enduro

http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com http://tractionerag.ca Good news, we finally have answers from Leatt about rusted brackets on their premium helmets. The story so far? A rusted strap bracket was discovered on this top of the line Leatt GPX helmet at 13 months old. A warranty claim was refused by the Australian distributor on these grounds. We thought this was unacceptable and emailed Leatt's head office these questions. Initially there was no reply. We then posted a video about the issue and again invited Leatt to reply. And finally they did! In the meantime, we encouraged riders to check their helmets for rust, regardless of brand. Leatt helmet review vids won't mention this problem. These are some of the Leatt owners who responded. Please note the number of cases is small, although significant given the implications if the strap failed in an accident. This is the worst case we've seen. Rusted after 20 hours use. A helmet stored indoors, never washed, or exposed to salt water or rain. But there's good news. Leatt did finally answer our questions! In a nutshell? Will they honor warranty claims about rusted brackets? Yes.
Given the safety issues, will the replace rusted helmets outside of warranty too? Yes.
Will they change to a high grade stainless steel in future? Maybe, they are looking into it.
Do all their helmets use the same zinc coated steel? Yes, so check your Leatt regardless of which model you have.
Why did Leatt not use stainless steel to begin with? Pause to read.
It's good to see Leatt publicly stating they will replace helmets with rusted brackets. Remember Leatt is not alone with this issue. It's happened to Airoh helmets. Again their head office never responded to our questions. We emailed them. We messaged them via Facebook. And the Australian distributor chased them up twic. Evidently Airoh does not give a shit.
Rust was a serious issue with Suomy helmets, the strap actually pulled off mine when the corroded bracket broke. Suomy's head office never responded to our questions. But eventually a dealer confirmed it occurred on their 2013 and 2014 range but they changed to stainless steel after that.
And since we've been highlighting this issue, riders have told us about rusted brackets with other brands such as Bell, Fox, Acerbis, Kali, Oneal, Just 1 and Jitsie. So check your helmet for rust regularly, and as Leatt has shown, spending a lot of money on your helmet doesn't mean those brackets won't rust!
We strongly believe the following helmets should have proper stainless steel brackets:
Leatt GPX 6.5 Leatt GPX 5.5 Leatt GPX 4.5 Leatt GPX 3.5 And the entire DBX range too!
Unfortunately Leatt appears to only use mild steel for their helmet brackets, meaning if the zinc coating fails then the strap can pull off. We noticed this rust starting before doing our Leatt GPX helmet review. We emaild Leatt but they haven't confirmed if the same brackets are used on the GPX 6.5, GPX 5.5, GPX 4.5 and GPX 3.5 helmets too. We were not happy with this Leatt helmet. In fact we were extremely unhappy. So if you have a Leatt helmet, check these brackets for rust regularly. In fact check them whatever brand of helmet you have. And next time you buy a helmet, find out if the manufacturer has used proper stainless steel or not. On the positive side? While Scott refuses to wear this Leatt helmet anymore, he was liking it. It was well ventilated, comfortable and met the European standard which is probably the best out of a bunch of increasingly outdated standards. If Leatt does ever respond to our questions, we'll include their answer in the text description or as a pinned first comment. Fingers crossed. After just 13 months of use we discovered the brackets that hold the straps were badly corroded during this GPX 4.5 review. This obviously began only months after buying the helmet but the Australian Leatt distributor's response to the warranty claim? Nothing. We suspect the same brackets are used in the cheaper helmets and will be watching Leatt DBX helmet reviews as a result. Leatt advised our helmet warranty claim was rejected because "The rivet and washer was treated with an anti-rust coating at the factory. The rust in this case is an indication of contact with sweat or salt water during riding. Advice: Clean properly and spray some rust inhibitor onto it."
