Honda explained its decision to leave F1 as a need to focus on more sustainable forms of powertrains and this has led many to question if F1’s future is in jeopardy. Some have even suggested that F1’s electric counterpart - Formula E could benefit from all of this. Formula E’s founder Alejandro Agag has given his thoughts on this.

I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World:

Is Honda’s Departure From F1 Good For Formula E?

Agag began by giving his views on the effect of Honda’s departure from F1

“I see it as bad news for motorsport in general. I don’t see this as good news for Formula E and bad news for Formula One”

He then explained why Formula E needs F1

“We in Formula E also need Formula One to be successful because we don’t see each other as competitors. We see each other as on the same boat and competing against tennis, football and other sports”

“If one manufacturer leaves motorsport, it doesn’t mean it’s going to come through another door to us. It may stay out of motorsport altogether so that’s not good news”

He signed off by detailing his views on the future of motorsports

“There will always be a space for combustion motorsport but it won’t be related to the industry. I think the industry will eventually only focus on electric motorsport”

McLaren’s team principal Andreas Seidl thinks that “not only from a personal point of view, but also from an F1 perspective, it is important that” they “have a race in Germany. There is a lot of motorsport history in this country”

His driver Carlos Sainz hopes that one day they “will all be able to drive the same F1 car and see who is the fastest”

He also feels that “at the end of the day, the F2, F3 or the rallycross is something complementary to” F1

His teammate Lando Norris pointed out that McLaren is “a fun place now, it’s enjoyable, but” they “do need to get the balance right with having fun and being professional”

He also feels that with Daniel Ricciardo “being the fun guy of the paddock, it will be another good boost for the team” next year

Williams’ team principal Simon Roberts has stated that they “are only going to spend money on the parts that are really needed”

Sebastian Vettel thinks that it “would be fun” if they “had the chance in touring cars or something, where” they “could race each other hard”

Honda have confirmed that they will continue to supply engines to IndyCar till the end of this decade

Former F1 driver Robert Doornbos feels that the Ferrari “car is not efficient enough on straights, does not have a good aerodynamic balance and the mechanical grip is also far from ideal”

He further explained that “for a long time, their good engine was able to disguise all the problems. Now that's all coming up”
